RESOURCES FOR FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT DISCUSSION AT SUMMER INSTITUTE:


"ConcepTests" is a brief description of a simple classroom assessment approach, similar to the Cross/Angelo "Muddiest Point" example but focused on gathering evidence of student understandings/skills related to specific concepts.



The Transition Math Project Resources page has a number of links to all sorts of useful material, including assessments; one of the links to the Dana Center at UT Austin will lead you to a set of tasks developed there that are linked to the Texas state standards but still provide a good example of format and approach for high-quality tasks--here's an example: Paintings on the Wall

Here are a number of tasks that were developed (in some cases adapted) by math teacher teams in the Transition Math Project focusing on different areas of the College Readiness Math Standards. The tasks have gone through limited vetting so they're offered as examples for you to consider and adapt if you'd like, not as flawless specimens of standards-based performance assessments:










The Inside Mathematics web site, developed and sponsored by the Noyce Foundation, which launched the Silicon Valley Math Initiative, also includes examples of MARS balanced assessments, focus on K-10 (through Algebra I and Geometry). Below is a MARS (Math Assessment Resource Service) document describing the domain framework approach for their assessment work:





Linda Fisher's presentation on formative assessment and workshop on "re-engagement lessons" from the TMP Summer 2009 Institute are helpful in thinking about how to integrate high-quality assessment into ongoing classroom instruction.




I've posted below a collection of files related to various assessment topics with brief descriptive annotations so you can decide whether any of them are useful resources for your work...

  • The OECD_PISA Framework for "Mathematical Literacy" provides an in-depth and accessible description of how tasks are designed for the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), a well-respected benchmark assessment of the problem-solving skills of 15-year-olds.

  • "BCCh5" is a chapter from AMATYC's Beyond Crossroads document providing a succinct, big-picture overview of assessment issues from the classroom to the program level.

  • "MacGuffin" is a provocative article from Dylan Wiliam about the challenges and dangers of math teachers trying to construct allegedly "authentic" math task (and here is a brief description of Dylan's discussion at a TMP Institute about key considerations for designing/assessing math tasks:

  • "Extended Response MathRubric" and "Math_Student_Rubric" offer an example of a scoring rubric that can be used to help develop and refine math assessments; the "student" file is a student-friendly version of the "extended response" rubric (grades 7-8).

  • "ADP_Assignments_Tasks" provides a few examples of workplace-related tasks developed as part of the American Diploma Project, sponsored by Achieve, Inc. ADP was probably the first effort to develop "national" math and English standards for college readiness; the ADP standards were one of the resources we used in building our Washington College Readiness Math Standards.

  • "Best Computer" and "Gas Station..." are 2 problems that Dan Teague, from the North Carolina School for Science and Math, shared as pre-readings prior to his workshop at the 2008 TMP summer Institute. During the workshop he led us through a fascinating real-world problem related to the Suez Canal; I can't seem to find an electronic version of that one on the web site but if I do I'll add it here...

Here's a general video about using assessment to improve instruction; Karen Casto from Western Washington University asked me to do something for a series she was producing for the campus. I did the script and the audio, obviously (this is about the 5th take and I still couldn't get it perfect, so I gave up! :-(, but Karen and the staff at WWU did all the fun stuff with the slides and graphics!
